Dear Ultrasound Insider,
In breast ultrasound, attention to detail and a certain amount of suspicion are needed to avoid missing breast cancers, according to Dr. Dona Hills of Queens-Long Island Medical Group in North Babylon, NY.
In a presentation at the 2005 American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine annual convention earlier this year, Hills presented a retrospective review of breast cancer patients over a 12-year period with ultrasound BI-RADS category 3 or less. She found that the missed lesions had ultrasound characteristics that were not those usually associated with breast cancer.
For example, the lesions had no shadowing, had little or no fat compression, and were mostly round or oval.
