SonoSite

SonoSite of Bothell, WA, will give RSNA attendees a look at the third generation of its compact ultrasound technology, the 8-lb notebook-size MicroMaxx system.

Introduced in April 2005, MicroMaxx includes high-performance features such as high-frequency linear and multiplane transesophageal imaging. The scanner features a 128-channel beamformer integrated into four proprietary postage stamp-sized ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) chips, enhancing the device's performance in a configuration smaller than conventional ultrasound systems, according to the company.

MicroMaxx also offers the option of SonoSite's embedded SonoCalc IMT (intima media thickness) software for early detection and management of cardiovascular disease. The measurement can detect subclinical atherosclerosis in its very early stages before significant atherosclerotic plaque accumulates.

MicroMaxx can operate on battery power for as long as four hours. The company offers a five-year warranty on the system and transducers for most clinical applications.

SonoSite will also debut two new broadband transducers for use with MicroMaxx. P10 is a high-frequency phased-array probe for pediatric and neonatal radiology and cardiology assessment, while HST 13-6 serves as a high-frequency linear-array probe for imaging the vascular system and superficial structures. Existing MicroMaxx systems are compatible with the new transducer technology.
