SonoSite's MicroMaxx to be used in NASA trial

Compact-ultrasound developer SonoSite reported that NASA will use its MicroMaxx ultrasound system to demonstrate the emergency treatment of a musculoskeletal injury during simulated space flight conditions with the aid of telemonitoring.

The space agency plans to conduct the test during an 18-day experiment on the ninth mission of NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations under 19 meters of water near Key Largo, FL. Each astronaut will use the notebook-sized MicroMaxx to perform a diagnostic ultrasound on an injured knee prosthetic under the direction of radiologists and surgeons at McMaster University in Ontario, according to the Bothell, WA-based firm.

In other SonoSite news, the company announced that it has shipped more than 25,000 of its hand-carried ultrasound systems worldwide.
