Dear Ultrasound Insider,
Microbubble-based ultrasound contrast agents can open the door to better detection of low-volume blood flow, thanks to increases in signal-to-noise ratio. And the contrast agents can be quite valuable in guiding prostate cancer biopsies, according to researchers from the University Hospital Innsbruck in Vienna, Austria.
In a prospective trial of 100 consecutive men, five or fewer contrast-enhanced color Doppler ultrasound targeted biopsy cores were found to be more effective at detecting cancer than 10 grayscale ultrasound-guided systematic biopsy cores, according to Dr. Leo Pallwein. He presented the team's research at the 2005 RSNA meeting in Chicago.
