Dear PACS Insider,
Specialized requirements for some imaging modalities make them a challenge, even today, for PACS networks to handle. Ultrasound is a perfect example. While ultrasound miniPACS have been around for quite some time, PACS vendors have only relatively recently begun to include the necessary capabilities to view and interpret ultrasound studies on their general PACS offerings.
The inclusion of ultrasound is also affected by the modality's changing workflow requirements. While much has been made over the increasing size and complexity of CT and MR studies, ultrasound has also experienced growing image and exam sizes, thanks to factors such as volumetric scanning and advances in instruments and transducers.
PACS and digital healthcare and information management systems (DHIMS) can help by conferring productivity gains, according to Dr. Steven Horii of the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia. He discussed the impact of digital technologies on the modality in a talk at the recent PACS 2007 conference, sponsored by the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry in New York.
