Dear Ultrasound Insider,

Ultrasound is recognized as an effective and speedy means of detecting abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). And emergency physicians can quickly and accurately screen for AAAs in at-risk patients, according to a study by researchers from Yale University in New Haven, CT.

The emergency physicians discovered 13 AAAs among the 179 patients scanned in the prospective trial, according to Dr. Scott Holliday, who presented the findings at the 2007 American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) meeting in New York City. Ten of these 13 patients have received follow-up imaging, which confirmed the AAAs in all cases.

The findings are especially significant given research published last week by a U.K. group that adds further weight to the body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of AAA ultrasound screening. The group screened men and women 65 years of age and older, and found that ultrasound screening produced a significant decrease in AAA-related mortality in men (though not in women).
