SonoSite shows early Q1 results

Compact-ultrasound developer SonoSite of Bothell, WA, posted modest gains in revenue in the first quarter of 2009 (end-March 31).

The company's preliminary report shows that worldwide revenue decreased by 1% to 2%, compared with the first quarter of 2008. On a constant currency basis, worldwide revenue grew 6% to 7% in the quarter, indicating an adverse currency effect of approximately 8%.

U.S. revenue rose approximately 4% compared to the same quarter a year ago, with the continued slowing of U.S. hospital capital spending driving a mid-teen percentage decline in SonoSite's U.S. hospital revenue. The decline was offset by what the company described as "excellent" growth in its U.S. enterprise channel.

International revenue decreased approximately 6% in the quarter, driven by the impact of a weaker dollar. On a constant currency basis, the international sector was up approximately 8% in the first quarter, compared with the same quarter of 2008.

SonoSite will report its full financial results for the first quarter on April 27 after the close of market.
