The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) and the American Urological Association (AUA) have teamed to develop a practice guideline for urology ultrasound exams.
Called the Practice Guideline for the Performance of an Ultrasound Examination in the Practice of Urology, the guideline provides direction in the areas of kidney, bladder, prostate, scrotal, and penile ultrasound, according to the organizations. It also addresses issues relating to documentation, quality control and improvement, safety, infection control, and patient education.
The AIUM and AUA have also collaborated to develop training guidelines for urologists who perform ultrasound. These guidelines will serve as a road map for practices wishing to voluntarily seek accreditation for ultrasound through the AIUM, according to the organizations.
