A dedicated critical care ultrasound training program could yield significant improvements in knowledge and image acquisition skills for fellows, researchers from the University of North Carolina have found.
Self-assessment surveys completed before and after a dedicated curriculum of didactic and bedside sessions revealed an increase in scores from 51.4% to 87.3%, according to the team. The researchers shared their findings during a presentation at this week's Chest 2012 meeting in Atlanta.
Fellows completed the surveys to assess confidence in their ultrasonography knowledge and skills, as well as their perception of training effectiveness.
Ultrasound knowledge scores climbed from 71.4% to 89.1% and bedside image acquisition scores rose from 31.5% to 85.6%. Confidence scores also improved from 2.96 to 4.35 postintervention.
