Univ. of Calif. grant supports bedside US training

The University of California has provided a $250,000 grant to support the expansion of a bedside ultrasound training program from the University of California, Irvine (UCI) to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

The two-year grant will be led by Dr. Elizabeth Turner, UCLA director of bedside ultrasound in the division of pulmonary and critical care medicine.

Two years ago, Turner received a grant to develop a curriculum for bedside ultrasound training while she was at UCI. The curriculum helped critical care and cardiology fellows at UCI gain knowledge and confidence of at least the level of experts and apprentice-based learners in a shorter amount of time than other training pathways, according to the university.

The new grant, from the University of California's Center for Health Quality and Innovation Quality Enterprise Risk Management, will enable the bedside ultrasound training curriculum to be implemented at several intensive care units at UCLA and will include assessment of the curriculum's effects on care quality and safety, according to the university. Turner will focus training on the treatment of circulatory shock.
