MR-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) for symptomatic uterine fibroids leads to long-term symptom relief, according to study results to be discussed in this Monday afternoon presentation.
Dr. Alexander Beck, from Charité University Hospital in Berlin, and colleagues measured long-term results after the procedure using the Uterine Fibroid Symptom and Quality of Life Questionnaire with 54 women who had undergone MRgFUS between 2003 and 2008.
According to the survey results, women experienced relief from their fibroid symptoms after three and 12 months, but especially at long-term follow-up (median, 59 months). Overall quality-of-life scores increased significantly from a median of 64.7 to 77.6 after three months and to 82.8 after 12 months. At long-term follow-up, there was a further increase up to a median of 87.1, Beck's group found.
