Dear Ultrasound Insider,

Coverage from last week's American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) annual meeting in Las Vegas takes center stage in this issue of the Insider.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration still hasn't cleared the use of any ultrasound contrast agents for radiology applications; however, that hasn't prevented their use in the U.S. In a talk at the AIUM meeting, Dr. Richard Barr, PhD, of Northeastern Ohio Medical University shared how practices can use these agents "off-label" to reap the benefits of contrast-enhanced ultrasound in a range of applications.

Our coverage of Dr. Barr's presentation is the subject of this newsletter's Insider Exclusive, which you have access to before our regular members.

In other coverage from AIUM 2014, researchers from Elizabeth Wende Breast Care in Rochester, NY, found that among women told they had dense breast tissue after mammography screening, fewer than 2% returned for follow-up ultrasound exams. Presenter Dr. Stamatia Destounis shared the institution's experience after more than a year under New York's breast density information law.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound has come a long way over the years and is flourishing, thanks to the technology's clinical utility and collaboration between practitioners, according to Dr. Levon Nazarian of Thomas Jefferson University. Click here to learn how.

Speaking of musculoskeletal ultrasound, the modality continues to grow as a crucial tool for imaging musculoskeletal pathology in U.S. Olympic athletes. What effect has it had? Click here to find out.

Stay tuned in the coming weeks for follow-up coverage from AIUM 2014.
