Philips Healthcare has launched Lumify, a new technology program that will enable mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets to be used as ultrasound scanners.
The program is built around the Lumify transducer, which incorporates all of the electronics required for ultrasound scanning in the probe's handle. The transducer can then be connected to an Android-based smart device via a USB cable, according to Randy Hamlin, vice president and business segment leader of the Philips Ultramobile division.
The Lumify transducer. Image courtesy of Philips.Users start by registering and downloading an app from the Google Play app marketplace, at which point a Lumify transducer will be mailed to them. They can begin scanning after plugging the probe into their mobile device. Apps will be offered on a month-to-month subscription model, and users can cancel whenever they wish with no penalty, Hamlin said.
The program is designed to remove barriers that may prevent healthcare personnel from using ultrasound, such as an upfront capital investment. An online portal will allow users to manage their device and receive support, training, and IT services, according to the vendor.
The first-generation Lumify transducer has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance and will be released in the U.S. later this year, Philips said. The initial app will cover basic ultrasound applications such as grayscale and color Doppler imaging, and the company plans to release additional mobile applications, transducers, and services for its app-based portal in the future.
Support for other mobile platforms including iOS and Windows is also in the works, Hamlin said. Philips has not yet released pricing for the subscription model.
