Firms bring ultrasound bone density screening to U.S.

Swedish ultrasound bone density technology developer Bone Index and wellness screening services provider Life Line Screening are teaming up to provide ultrasound-based bone density screening to consumers in the U.S.

Under the partnership, Life Line Screening will offer the Bindex point-of-care ultrasound device to consumers during its approximately 15,000 health and wellness screening events each year in the U.S., according to the companies. Bindex measures the cortical bone thickness of the tibia; its software algorithm then calculates the density index, a parameter that estimates bone mineral density at the hip. This is a similar calculation to those provided on dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) x-ray devices, Bone Index and Life Line Screening said.

Bindex has 19 patents worldwide and is now being used in an osteoporosis screening campaign in Finland, Bone Index said.
