Ultrasound technology developer Rivanna Medical announced the U.K.'s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has issued a medtech innovation briefing (MIB45) on the performance of Accuro for guiding interventional procedures in people with obesity.

The Accuro handheld ultrasound technology was evaluated for guiding spinal and epidural anesthesia procedures in people with obesity in clinical studies that included 423 adults. Accuro reportedly was accurate for locating intervertebral spaces and required fewer needle insertions compared with palpation alone in people with obesity irrespective of provider experience level or type of neuraxial anesthesia performed.

Comments from clinical experts in the briefing suggest the technology could reduce procedure time and discomfort because of the need for fewer needle insertions, according to Rivanna.
