In a deal aimed at incorporating artificial intelligence (AI)-based image guidance capability into its ultrasound product line, GE HealthCare has signed an agreement to acquire AI software developer Caption Health.

Caption Health has developed AI software designed to enable a wide range of healthcare professionals to acquire basic echocardiography exams at alternate care locations, including at home. For GE HealthCare, the acquisition would fit its strategy of pursuing precision healthcare, as well as broadening access to point-of-care ultrasound technology for new types of users and supporting more clinical applications, according to the vendor.

Once the deal is finalized, Caption Health will be integrated into the broader digital ecosystem of GE HealthCare, according to Karley Yoder, chief digital officer for ultrasound.

"Caption Health will first be integrated in the Point of Care and Handheld business portfolio to advance ultrasound adoption, with expanded future use cases as well," she said in a statement.

Caption Health will also continue to provide its Caption Care management and administrative services to affiliated medical service providers. Under this program, trained technicians equipped with the firm's AI technology can perform echocardiograms at alternate sites of care, according to the vendor. The goal is to support early detection and diagnosis before diseases such as heart failure become more difficult to treat, GE HealthCare said.

Development will also continue on Caption Health's AI software pipeline, including technology supporting the use of ultrasound in pulmonary applications, GE HealthCare said.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions.
