Dear AuntMinnie Member,
It's hard to believe, but there are still some folks who question whether mammography screening saves lives. Yet another study was presented this week that refutes that belief, and we're featuring an article on the research in our Women's Imaging Digital Community.
Massachusetts researchers followed nearly 7,000 women who were diagnosed with breast cancer from 1990 to 1999, tracking their death rates through 2007. The results showed not only more breast cancer deaths among women who were not screened, but also mortality rates 10 times higher compared to those who received screening. Also in the community, we're highlighting an article on the use of second-look ultrasound for unexpected breast lesions found on MRI, and a story on ductal carcinoma in situ recurrence rates in younger women.
