Bush signs screening legislation

President George W. Bush on Friday signed legislation that extends a program providing federal funding for screening exams for breast and cervical cancer.

Bush signed H.R. 1132, the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program Reauthorization Act. The act extends for another five years federal funding for low-income and uninsured women to receive cervical and breast screening exams, including mammography.

Since its creation, the program has conducted nearly 7 million cancer screenings, including an estimated 700,000 in 2007, according to the president.
