Advanced breast imaging gets readier; PACS, CAD team up; Minnies last chance

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Mammography still reigns as the best way to find breast cancers, but the modality's shortcomings -- mostly related to imaging 3D structures with a 2D modality -- are well known.

Fortunately, several new breast imaging techniques are closer to widespread use than ever before. A feature story by associate editor Kate Madden Yee sums up the latest thinking in alternative breast imaging modalities, from digital breast tomosynthesis to CT laser mammography.

CAD connections

Computer-aided detection (CAD) has become an essential tool for radiologists scanning everything from the abdomen to the brain. But there's a big, hulking elephant in the room -- namely, the need to painstakingly transfer imaging studies from the PACS network to a separate CAD workstation.

A team from Brazil has proposed an elegant solution in the form of a system that automatically pulls studies from a PACS server, applies CAD software on a workstation, and returns the combined results to the PACS. Radiologists can then view the CAD results side by side and slice by slice with the original CT study. Find out how they did it by visiting our PACS Digital Community or by clicking here.

Last call for Minnies

Finally, for procrastinators who want to do the right thing, these are the final hours to submit nominations for the Minnies, our annual awards recognizing excellence in radiology. Just head to minnies.auntminnie.com to nominate your favorites by August 21 or bust.
