On the heels of a recent hacker attack on a mammography research computer server at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), North Carolina radiology group Wake Radiology has decided to suspend its participation in the Carolina Mammography Registry (CMR) study.
In a press release, the Raleigh, NC-based radiology group cited its concern with the potential exposure of personal patient data, which had been stored unencrypted on a UNC server used for the CMR. Wake Radiology, one of 35 North Carolina groups participating in the study, said it's awaiting information on the investigation currently being conducted by UNC officials.
"Based on this experience and in the best interest of patient privacy, Wake Radiology has determined that it will no longer participate in studies that require personal patient information," the group said. "Involvement in future studies will be limited to anonymous, unidentified data."
