Hologic revenue, earnings up in Q3

Growth in all four of its operating segments contributed to a 7.2% increase in revenue for women's imaging firm Hologic in its fiscal third quarter.

For the period (end-June 25), Hologic had revenues of $451.1 million, up from $420.7 million in the fiscal third quarter of 2010. The vendor had net income of $36.2 million, up from $27.4 million a year ago.

Among its different business units, Hologic's Breast Health division posted quarterly revenues of $205.2 million, up 8.4% compared to sales of $189.3 million in the same period the year before. The firm said that growth was driven primarily by a shift in sales from its Selenia full-field digital mammography (FFDM) system to the newer Dimensions model, stronger sales of breast biopsy products, and the inclusion of breast coil sales related to the company's acquisition of Sentinelle Medical in August 2010.

Sales in the company's Skeletal Health business, which includes its osteoporosis and mini-C-arm products, grew 3.2% to $23.1 million in the quarter.

In other Hologic news, the company has appointed David LaVance Jr. as its new independent chairman. The appointment follows the succession plan put in place two years ago, allowing Jack Cumming to step down as chairman and from the board to focus on his role as global strategic advisor, supporting Hologic's key international initiatives, the company said.
