ECR opens to sounds of Spring; the future of tomo; cutting CTA dose

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

VIENNA - The European Congress of Radiology (ECR) opened today to the sounds of Spring -- Vivaldi's "Spring," that is, from his "Four Seasons" concerto.

It was a fitting selection, as Vienna enjoys unseasonably mild weather that has many attendees leaving their overcoats at the hotel. ECR 2012 President Dr. Lorenzo Bonomo also exuded warmth as he welcomed radiology professionals in the opening ceremony, which was interspersed with performances by Il Falcone, a Baroque ensemble from Genoa, Italy. Check out a video of the performance in our photo gallery.

But ECR isn't just high culture -- it also boasts a wide range of scientific sessions, and editors from AuntMinnie.com and our sister site, AuntMinnieEurope.com, are onsite filing daily reports. There's a lot of ground to cover, so here we go!

Read about a prediction made by Dr. Thomas Helbich of the Medical University of Vienna regarding the future potential of digital breast tomosynthesis versus the current gold standard, full-field digital mammography. His prediction might surprise you -- or maybe not. Learn more by clicking here.

And an Italian team led by Dr. Lorenzo Faggioni of the University of Pisa discussed their technique for slashing radiation dose in coronary CT angiography (CCTA) by using a low-voltage protocol. They were able to cut dose nearly in half -- find out how by clicking here.

Another tradition is the opening day press conference, which you can read about in detail by clicking here. Leading lights of ECR 2012 discussed the conference's emphasis on interactivity, the growing role of radiology in the integrated healthcare management team, integrated diagnostics, and other important topics.
