Quebec radiologist missed 109 breast cancer cases

Quebec's College of Physicians revealed on Tuesday that it found 109 undetected cancers after reviewing more than 22,000 mammography exams conducted by a Quebec radiologist, according to an article posted on Canada.com.

The exams were conducted by a now-retired doctor at three clinics: Jean-Talon Belanger in Montreal, Radiologie Domus Medica (also in Montreal, but now closed), and Radiologie Fabreville in Laval. The college declined to name the radiologist, although news reports have identified him as Dr. Raymond Bergeron, Canada.com said.

The findings are the results of an investigation that the college began in November 2010. More than 40 radiologists reviewed 17,834 exams, concluding that the radiologist missed 96 cases of breast cancer; when investigators then widened their probe to review an additional 4,739 exams at the three clinics, they found 13 more cases of undetected breast cancer.
