In another attempt at passing breast density notification legislation, the California State Senate and Assembly have passed a bill that would require women with dense breast tissue to be informed of their status.
Initiated by Sen. Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto), SB 1538 would require that following a mammogram, women with dense breast tissue are informed that dense breast tissue can obscure abnormalities on a mammogram, and that they may wish to discuss the potential value of additional screening with their doctor.
The bill passed unanimously in both the Assembly and Senate; the legislation now heads to Gov. Jerry Brown, who vetoed a similar bill in 2011.
