Breast imaging software developer Volpara Solutions is touting the efforts of the Dense Tissue and Early Breast Neoplasm Screening (DENSE) study, the first randomized trial to investigate the use of MRI for screening women with dense breasts.
VolparaDensity software is being used to provide volumetric breast density values in the study, which was detailed online June 23 in Radiology. The goal of the study is to determine the efficacy of screening with mammography and MRI versus mammography alone in women who have extremely dense breast tissue.
In the trial, participants with extremely dense tissue and a negative mammography result are randomized to receive an additional MRI scan or to follow the usual mammography screening program.
The primary outcome will be the difference in the proportion of interval cancers between the two groups.
