An imaging center in Illinois has stopped performing mammography examinations after a review by the American College of Radiology (ACR) found deficiencies with the images, according to a published report.
Belleville Imaging of Belleville stopped performing mammography after the ACR found deficiencies in a review of 30 exams acquired between May 2014 and August 2016, according to an article in the Belleville News-Democrat. Eighteen images failed to meet the ACR's evaluation criteria for clinical images, with problems ranging from breast positioning and compression to image contrast and sharpness. In addition, the ACR reviewer did not agree with nine of the 30 interpretations.
Belleville Imaging sent a letter to 2,100 patients in September and October explaining the review, according to the article. The letter recommended that patients have their mammograms reviewed again to see if a repeat study is necessary.
The ACR letter prompted state healthcare regulators, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), to issue an emergency order suspending Belleville Imaging's mammography service. The article quotes a spokesperson for the center who said the facility was transferring images to a local hospital and was notifying patients as to how they can pick them up.
