Revenue increases in its breast health and international businesses helped drive continued revenue growth in the second quarter of fiscal 2018 for women's imaging firm Hologic, but the company posted a big net loss due to a one-time charge.
For the period (end-March 31), Hologic's revenue increased to $789.3 million, up 10.3% before currency adjustments from $715.4 million in the same quarter a year ago. Adjusting for currency changes reduces the growth rate to 8.3%.
Revenue in the company's breast health division reached $300.1 million, up 7% before currency adjustments from $280.5 million in the second quarter of 2017. Adjusting for currency changes reduces the growth rate to 4.9%.
Despite the revenue growth, Hologic had a net loss of $681.4 million in the second quarter, compared with net income of $526.8 million for the same quarter last year. Hologic attributed the net loss to the write-down of assets related to its acquisition of Cynosure.
