The American College of Radiology (ACR) Foundation announced the recipients of its global humanitarian award at the college's annual meeting in Washington, DC.
Dr. Richard Hirsh received the individual award for his positive impact on the field of radiology. His work is marked by his contribution to establishing Radiology Mammography International (RMI), a nonprofit organization that delivers mammography and breast ultrasound services to individuals across the globe. Hirsh has led more than 35 volunteer trips in which he and a team of clinicians offered training to local medical personnel, and provided community outreach and services for breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Argentinian research institute Mamotest won the group award for its efforts in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. Mamotest operates 12 clinics led by a network of mammography specialists throughout Argentina. The group's initiatives have helped spur the passing of a law in three provinces that permits women to take off one day of work per year to visit the gynecologist and receive a mammogram.
