Three-dimensional software developer Viatronix has installed its first virtual colonoscopy system, Viatronix Visualization System (VVS), at Open Systems Imaging in Palm Desert, CA. VVS is a PC-based workstation that enables users to conduct virtual 3-D fly-throughs of the colon by rendering helical CT data.
VVS is based on research conducted at the State University of New York at Stony Brook; the system was cleared by the Food and Drug Administration in November. Viatronix, which is currently located in a high-tech incubator at the university, plans to install the workstations at eight other sites in California. The company also hopes to begin sales in Europe and other international markets this year.
