Image-guidance technology developer Cbyon said its products have been used to perform the first image-guided thoracoscopic discectomy. Dr. Patrick Johnson, a neurosurgeon at UCLA Medical Center, performed the complex spinal surgery in Los Angeles yesterday, Cbyon said.
The procedure was assisted by the use of Cbyon's 3-D computerized surgical image guidance technology, which tracks surgical instruments within the patient's body during the procedure. The Cbyon Suite is an image-guided surgery system that enables 3-D visualization of patient-specific anatomy and the synchronization of 3-D data with intraoperative data such as endoscopic images, according to the Palo Alto, CA-based firm.
The successful surgery was performed on a professional golfer in his mid-20s. The patient had exhibited early warning signs of disc damage that put him at risk of progressive spinal-cord injury, according to Cbyon.
