The displacement of organs and tumors during radiation therapy creates a moving target for treatment planners. But researchers from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond, VA, may have come up with a solution.
The VCU team has developed a model that's able to essentially update the pretreatment CT scans with newly acquired planar projection images, allowing for simulation of deformed anatomy. Proof-of-concept tests showed that their simulated deformations were accurate to within a few percentage points of simulated projection radiographs.
