Canadian computer-aided detection (CAD) software developer Medipattern of Toronto has inked a deal licensing rights to its B-CAD breast imaging software to Orison of Johnson City, TN.
Orison is developing an ultrasound-based 3D breast tomography system, and will incorporate the B-CAD software into the unit. Orison's system is designed to capture anatomically correct whole-breast patient images without either breast compression or radiation. Medipattern's software will improve clinical workflow for users and will help clinicians assess whether to biopsy a selected nodule, according to the companies.
Medipattern will receive $250,000 (U.S.) on the initiation of the project, as well as service fees and royalties for each system sold. Medipattern will also receive a small equity stake in Orison in exchange for proprietary technology. The customized version of B-CAD will be licensed through Medipattern's marketing partner, Cedara Software of Mississauga, Ontario, a subsidiary of Merge Healthcare of Milwaukee.
