Surgical technology company Augmedics is highlighting the first use of its 3D augmented reality (AR) xvision spine system to guide a spine surgery.

The procedure was performed at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush Medical Center in Chicago, where Dr. Frank Phillips used the technology as part of a lumbar fusion with spinal implants on a patient with spinal instability.

The xvision system is designed to give surgeons better control and visualization during surgery by taking previously acquired 2D and 3D CT images and projecting them directly onto the surgeon's retina while also superimposing them over the surgical field. Augmedics received 510(k) clearance for the system in December 2019.

The patient was experiencing severe back pain and limited mobility prior to the surgery and is doing well after the procedure, according to Phillips.
