Kubtec's 3D Mozart specimen biopsy system reduces the need for breast cancer patients to undergo reexcisions after initial surgeries by more than 50%, according to a recent study published in the Annals of Surgical Oncology.
More than 650 lumpectomy procedures performed between 2013 and 2018 were analyzed by breast cancer surgeons at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Surgeries were performed on 191 patients with Kubtec's Mozart 3D specimen tomosynthesis imaging system, which allows tissue exams to occur in operating rooms without having to send specimens to radiology. The approximately 470 other patients underwent surgical procedures performed with 2D imaging, according to the authors.
Only 5% of patients who underwent surgeries using 3D imaging had to return for follow-up surgeries to remove lingering cancer cells. Of those who underwent surgeries using 2D imaging, 11% had to return for reexcisions, according to the findings.
