Minimally invasive surgery developer Intuitive Surgical of Sunnyvale, CA, has signed a cross-licensing agreement with robotic technology developer Hansen Medical of Mountain View, CA.
Hansen is developing robotic technology to provide physicians with more precise catheter control to help them access hard-to-reach anatomy in the chambers of the heart. Under the terms of the deal, Hansen has the right to use technologies covered under Intuitive Surgical patents for intravascular approaches for the diagnosis or treatment of cardiovascular, neurovascular, and peripheral vascular diseases.
Intuitive Surgical also gains rights to use Hansen Medical patents in endoscopic, laparoscopic, thoracoscopic, or open surgery, as well as endoluminal applications in gastrointestinal, respiratory, ear, nose and throat, urologic, and gynecologic surgery.
The deal also calls for Intuitive Surgical to receive an equity stake in Hansen Medical and royalties on future sales of Hansen products.
