Image-guided surgery market in U.S. to reach $300 million

A report from healthcare research firm Millennium Research Group of Waltham, MA, holds that the U.S. market for image-guided surgery (IGS) procedures, which currently exceeds $150 million, will grow to $300 million by 2011.

The firm said that growth in the orthopedic segment would be stronger if insurance companies provided reimbursement and more physicians adopted the technology. It estimates up to 70% of the 1 million Americans receiving hip and knee implants annually could benefit from a less invasive procedure, which would mean a shorter and less painful recovery.

In addition, Millennium noted that use of IGS lowers the number of procedures per day with its additional preparation time, compared with traditional techniques.
