Philips Healthcare and Brainlab have joined forces to build an intraoperative system that aims to streamline MRI-guided neurosurgery procedures.
The Ingenia MR-OR tool is based on Philips' MRI scanner (at 1.5- and 3.0-tesla field strengths) and is designed to be combined with Brainlab's integrated OR solutions. The system will be highlighted at next week's American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) meeting in Miami, the companies said in a statement.
MRI is used preoperatively in neurosurgery planning for the removal of brain tumors. However, updated MRI images have traditionally not been available during surgery, preventing surgeons from seeing the immediate impact of the interventions or guiding navigation in real time. Ingenia MR-OR allows surgeons to visualize the procedures in real time, allowing immediate access to patient information to facilitate surgical decision-making and permit the removal of residual tumor before the procedure is finished, the companies said.
