The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) has bestowed its 2023 Gold Medal awards during its annual meeting held in Phoenix, AZ.
The awardees include the following:
- Dr. Curtis Bakal (retired)
- Dr. James Caridi (deceased)
- Dr. Ziv Haskal of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville
Bakal served as president of SIR between 2001 and 2002 and has also served in the society's executive council and the editorial board of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. He was the founding director of the interventional radiology fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York City.
Caridi died in 2021. He was a professor of vascular and interventional radiology and chair of the department of radiology at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans, LA. In 2002, he received the SIR Foundation Pilot Research grant.
Haskal served as editor in chief of the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology between 2011 and 2020 and has been a longtime member of the society's executive committee and its foundation board of directors. In the 1990s, he initiated the first online monthly case discussion forum, SIR Case Club. His research has included transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPS) and complex portal hypertension, the SIR said.
