Image processing software developer Advanced Image Enhancement (AIE) has signed a licensing agreement with women's imaging vendor Hologic of Bedford, CT, to provide image enhancement software for Hologic's SecureView diagnostic mammography workstations.
Under the terms of the agreement, the Providence, RI-based firm's proprietary image enhancement software, which uses signal processing technology originally developed by the U.S. Navy to locate undersea mines, will allow SecureView users to extract more information from medical images.
In 2005, AIE completed a second clinical pilot study with researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and Faulkner Hospital using the technology with Hologic's digital mammography diagnostic workstation that determined that the software enhancement improves clarity of abnormalities, particularly in dense breast tissue, according to the company. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared AIE's software for use in 2006.
