Computer-aided detection (CAD) developer Riverain Medical of Miamisburg, OH, and the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio have established the first study in an ongoing program to evaluate the use of chest x-ray CAD for early detection of lung cancer.
The program is designed to demonstrate whether CAD can help identify hard-to-detect lung cancers at an early stage when they are most treatable. The study is funded by a grant from the state of Ohio, and will involve 9,000 test subjects, with enrollment in the clinical trial slated for early 2008.
The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Riverain Medical, in collaboration with Wright State University and University Hospitals Health System, have formed the Early Lung Disease Detection Alliance (ELDDA), a multidisciplinary research and commercialization program with the goal of enhancing early detection of lung cancer. The alliance plans to bring new image-analysis systems for chest x-rays to market.
