Fujifilm Medical Systems USA revealed the branding for its artificial intelligence (AI) project -- to be called REiLI -- at this week's Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) meeting.
REiLI is based on the Japanese term that means resourceful and intelligent. The branding also plays off the term "Rayleigh," a unit of measurement in physics for the amount of light.
Fujifilm began working in AI in 2016, and at the RSNA 2017 show, the firm formally announced the initiative. The announcement of the REiLI branding represents the next step in the project's evolution, according to the company.
The AI project is being run out of a Fujifilm site in Raleigh, NC, which is working with Fujifilm's corporate headquarters in Tokyo. The company is also partnering on the project with academic sites such as Indiana University.
With REiLI, Fujifilm is developing an AI platform that can be accessed through a PACS workstation. The company's clinical partners are developing specific AI algorithms that could be employed to help users interpret images and detect diseases at an earlier stage.
Fujifilm executives pointed out that commercialization of REiLI is a ways off, and the company does not have 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for any clinical applications. When available, the company will market REiLI to its installed base of users.
