Artificial intelligence (AI) software performed better than physicians in diagnosing brain tumors and predicting hematoma expansion in a competition held in China, according to an article on China.org.cn.
The software, called BioMind AI, correctly diagnosed brain tumors in 87% of 225 cases in about 15 minutes. A team of senior doctors, however, could only manage 66% accuracy, China.org.cn reported. In addition, the software correctly predicted brain hematoma expansion in 83% of cases, compared with 63% accuracy by the physicians.
BioMind AI was developed by the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre for Neurological Disorders at Beijing Tiantan Hospital and a research team from Capital Medical University. It was trained using tens of thousands of nervous system-related diseases archived by Tiantan Hospital over the past 10 years, and it can diagnose common neurological diseases such as meningioma and glioma with an accuracy rate of more than 90%, according to the article.
The cases used in the brain tumor and hematoma expansion challenge were not part of the training dataset.
