Computer software and artificial intelligence (AI) company RSIP Vision has developed an AI algorithm capable of generating 3D models of the knee joint from x-ray images.

The AI algorithm is based on convolutional neural networks and uses a tool called special dimensional enlargement layer to reconstruct bone surfaces in 3D from two conventional x-ray images. Tests conducted by the company showed that the 3D models had an accuracy of roughly 1 mm when compared with CT scans.

3D modeling from x-ray images can provide physicians with critical data for planning surgeries and testing the fit of implants, with the potential to improve physicians' workflow, reduce costs, and minimize radiation exposure to patients, RSIP Vision said.
