Artificial intelligence (AI) has been touted as having much potential to help radiologists interpret mammography images. But AI still needs to clear some hurdles before being more widely accepted in screening mammography -- as well as by patients, according to Dr. Emily Conant.
Conant, a professor of radiology and division chief of breast imaging at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, outlined those challenges in a presentation on May 6 at AuntMinnnie.com's Spring 2021 Virtual Conference. She said these challenges include the need for larger datasets, collaboration, and patient safety.
Despite the challenges, AI has opportunities to improve accuracy, decrease variability in interpreting breast images, and improve efficiency in delivery of care, especially as more studies are published, Conant said.
