Radiation oncology developer Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA, has acquired Sigma Micro Informatique Conseil, a French developer of information management software for radiation and medical oncology.
Varian paid about $13 million for the privately held company, which is based in Toulouse. Varian said the deal will allow the company to offer more comprehensive information management products, particularly in international markets like France.
Sigma Micro's products complement Varian's VARiS Vision software by supporting billing in many different reimbursement schemes, and the company's software works with equipment from multiple vendors, including Varian. It can be purchased, installed, and serviced over the Web, making it an attractive low-cost option for clinics that are using other software for managing diagnostic and treatment-planning images, according to Varian.
