Dear Healthcare IT Insider,
As you well know, February and March are historically busy months for new product announcements and news about healthcare IT in general, always timed in conjunction with the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) annual meeting.
This year 27,855 individuals poured into Atlanta's sprawling convention center during March 1-4. As has historically been the case since the HIMSS show began in 1993, educational sessions relating to imaging informatics could be counted on a single hand or, more specifically, a single finger. We think you'll find of interest our report on the presentation, a session cosponsored by the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) and presented by Janice Honeyman-Buck.
Implementing healthcare IT systems to meet meaningful use criteria was a predominant theme at HIMSS 2010, and if you missed it in person, you'll be interested in an assessment of which hospitals are positioned to meet federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) stimulus funds guidelines and which are not. Click here for details and here for AuntMinnie.com's overall assessment of the chase for "meaningful use" funds.
All the major speech recognition system vendors exhibited at the HIMSS meeting, which made us wonder about the dearth of published peer-review articles relating to the technology over the past several years. We think that you'll find of interest our coverage of the first article to break this drought, which describes how two U.K. hospitals improved report turnaround times by implementating speech recognition. The story is this newsletter's Insider Exclusive article, which you're reading days before the rest of the AuntMinnie.com membership.
While the study didn't discuss radiologist or physician satisfaction, Massachusetts General Hospital's radiologists did. Senior editor Erik L. Ridley reports on the overwhelmingly positive reaction that both groups had when images were added to radiology reports. Click here to read about an innovation that you may want to implement as well.
By the way, more HIMSS coverage is coming over the next few weeks, so keep abreast with the Healthcare IT Digital Community.
