MedQuist pays Kaiser $2M to settle lawsuit

Speech recognition and transcription technology provider MedQuist of Mount Laurel, NJ, has paid $2 million to Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Oakland, CA, to settle a lawsuit related to billing for medical transcription services.

The lawsuit, originally filed by Kaiser on June 6, 2008, in California Superior Court, alleged that MedQuist overbilled Kaiser for medical transcription services. The suit was later transferred to a federal court and expanded to include other Kaiser plans in other states.

Under an August 12 settlement, MedQuist agreed to pay $2 million to Kaiser to settle all claims related to the suit, with neither side admitting to wrongdoing or liability, according to an 8-K document filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Both Kaiser and MedQuist are responsible for paying their own attorneys' fees and related costs.
