ONC names final HITECH centers

The U.S. Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has awarded $10 million to two nonprofit organizations for its national regional extension center program.

This award completes an allocation of $677 million to 62 organizations by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, the $677 million was allocated to establish a nationwide system of regional extension centers to provide training, technical assistance, and other support services to assist U.S. healthcare providers in implementing electronic medical records.

The goal of the program is to provide outreach and support services to at least 100,000 priority primary care providers within two years.
