The University of Michigan announced that it will offer a new joint master's degree program in health informatics.
The interdisciplinary program will offer students a range of subspecialties, including consumer health informatics, public health informatics, and clinical informatics.
Dr. Charles Friedman, currently the chief scientific officer of the U.S. Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), has been recruited to head the program. He will start the position on September 1.
The master's degree program begins in the fall of 2012 and will require 52 credit hours and an internship. In addition, students enrolled in other graduate programs at the university may take six courses totaling 18 credits to earn a Graduate Certificate in Health Informatics. The certificate program begins in the fall of 2011.
