The American Medical Association (AMA) said that it is advocating for the standardization of key elements of electronic medical record (EMR) interface design.
Studies have shown that physicians' difficulty in efficiently locating critical patient information in EMR systems is due to poor user interface design, according to the AMA. In a statement, AMA board member Dr. Steven Stack said that standardized EMR interface designs will help physicians at multiple facilities with different EMR systems better navigate and use EMRs.
In addition, the AMA said it will advocate that medical facilities and health systems work toward standardized login procedures, continued physician education, and more research on EMR user interface design that can improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of healthcare.
